Nestled on the border of North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire is the quiet village of Wilberfoss. Home to just one pub, one church and one post office, it’s a quaint but nondescript Yorkshire village, where there’s never really anything going on. That is, expect, once a year on Easter Sunday, when the village folk gather for the annual Rubber Duck Race. And this year we thought we’d join them!
There are six races over the course of the afternoon, with 250 rubber ducks competing in each race. It costs just £1 to enter a duck and then it's thrown into a basket with all of it's competitors. At the start of each race the official adjudicator takes the basket up to the bridge and the crowds count down as the basket is overturned, with all of the ducks dropping into the stream. They meander along to the end of the race, and if your duck crosses the finish line first there's a £25 prize up for grabs!
I think this guy quite possibly has the best job on the day, helping along any of the ducks that get stuck in the edges of the stream!
There's plenty more fun to be had once all of the duck races are over, with burgers and hot dogs, tombolas and raffles and even an Easter Bonnet decorating competition!
Unfortunately they'd sold out of rubber ducks by the time we'd arrived, so we decided to compete in the guess-how-many-marbles-in-the-jar and guess-the-name-of-the-lamb games instead.
Unfortunately there were no prizes for us, so we treated ourselves to some ice cream instead, then it was home for the traditional Easter Sunday Roast. I will not go into too much detail about that here, as it's a bit awkward talking about how good the lamb we had tasted while looking at this cute teddy lamb!
What have you been up to this Easter?
