Most of the planning for our five week travel adventure involved going Pinterest crazy; I created two new boards dedicated to Eastern Europe and the Cacasus region and went on a rampage, pinning every beautiful photo of our destinations I could find!

While browsing all the stunning images for Bulgaria, there was one place that kept popping up time and time again; the Rila Monastery. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and is just a two hours drive from the country's capital, Sofia. When I saw that our hostel was able to arrange day trips to the site, I signed up straightaway!

It was even more beautiful in person, with the mountain scenery providing a magnificent backdrop to the dazzling architecture. I would definitely recommend a visit, but until you make it there yourself you're just going to have to marvel at these pictures; and believe me when I say they really do not do it justice!
