A five minute walk from my house is the University of York. A 'World Top 100' and 'Russell Group' university, according to the website. That isn't what draws me into the university grounds though.
I'm more interested in the beautiful landscaped gardens. The idyllic lakes topped with little wooden bridges. The weeping willows providing a backdrop to tranquil water fountains. The ducks swimming by and geese sunbathing in the grass. The perfectly maintained patches of grass littered only with daisies.
My photos do not do the scenery any justice at all. The water is a little murky, but other than that the whole area is spectacular. A definite must for appreciating a bright, sunny day.
I have always known the campus grounds were beautiful, but only recently did I discover one area that is particularly majestical; The Quiet Place.
Follow the signs and you will find quite a sight.
Row after row of towering trees, each cut into a unique shape. Square trees, round trees, smooth trees, ridged trees; all swirling high into the sky above you.
The beauty is enhanced by the surprise of discovering this place even exists. I have lived in York for more than fifteen years, and until recently I had no idea this area existed. I guess you could say they kept The Quiet Place pretty quiet!
Rumour has it that part of one of the Harry Potter movies was filmed here. I have found no evidence to back this up online though so not sure if it is just a rumour. If there's any Harry Potter fans out there let me know if you recognise the scenery!
It certainly made my day stumbling across these beautiful gardens and I will definitely be returning. I can imagine a few summer days will be wasted away here with a blanket and a book.
What magical discoveries have you made on your travels?
